BLUEWATER TRIATHLON and  DUATHLON - Saturday, July 24, 2010

Below are the final instructions to athletes for race day.

FINAL INSTRUCTIONS TO ATHLETES

ALL ATHLETES ATTEND THE PRE-RACE MEETING AT 7:50 AM RACE MORING IN THE TRANSITION AREA.

Timing You will be assigned a wrist strap with 3 Velcro numbers on race morning. Your times will depend on this strap and your management of it. As you exit the swim/finish Duathlon Run 1, you must give your first Velcro number to the timers at the entrance to the Transition area. Following your bike, as you begin Triathlon Run/Duathlon Run 2, you must give the second Velcro number to the timers as you exit the transition area. As you finish the race, present your third Velcro number to the timers at the finish line. A volunteer will collect your band. You will not receive a time unless you follow this procedure. Do not throw your Velcro number on the timing table or near a timer….hand it to a timer to ensure your time is counted correctly.

Medical Write on the back of your bib any medical conditions you have that our Medical Team should be aware of.

Torso and Headset Rules This event is sanctioned by OAT, therefore the torso and headset rules are in effect. The Torso Rule is that all athletes must wear some sort of covering over their torso. For women this means at least a sports bra or some sort of top. For men this means a singlet, triathlon top or some sort of top. If you race bare-chested you are disqualified. Headsets (ie listening to music etc via a portable device with any kind of headset) is not allowed; if you race with a headset you are disqualified.

Teams The swimmer/runner must exchange wrist bands with the biker in the transition zone at the start of the bike. The biker must stand beside his or her bike, with the bike racked on the bike rack. The biker must receive the timing wrist strap from their swimmer/runner, place it on their wrist, then they can remove their bike from the rack and proceed out of the transition zone. When they return from their bike ride they must rack their bike, then remove the timing tag from their wrist and give it to their 10 km runner.

Swim The swim will be cancelled or shortened if the lake is wavy. Wetsuits are allowed. Wear the swim cap provided. Some athletes have identified they are allergic to the latex in the bathing cap. They are exempted from wearing swim caps. We will have a beach start this year. Seed yourself accordingly at the swim start. Fast swimmers at the front, slower swimmers at the back. Keep the buoys to your right as you swim.

For your safety, we have Kayaks in the water with extra lifejackets and lifeguards walking along the road. We have our race doctor, two paramedics equipped with resuscitation equipment, and an ambulance on site. If you need assistance, stop, take your swim cap off and wave it. You may swim into shore at any time, and if you do not want to continue your swim, you can continue your race in a non-competitive division.

Bike DRAFTING IS ILLEGAL!! YOU CAN BE NO CLOSER THAN 3 METERS (10 FEET) TO ANOTHER CYCLIST. YOU WILL BE ASKED TO STOP, GET OFF, THEN RESART YOUR BICYCLE ON THE FIRST OFFENCE. YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED ON YOUR SECOND OFFENCE. This is strictly enforced by officials on motorcycles. The entire bike course is open to vehicle traffic, so be careful. Helmets are required. Your helmet must be done up before you take your bike off the rack at the start until you return it to the rack at the end. Watch for the mount and dismount lines as indicated by the volunteers.

We recommend you bring at least a litre of fluid on your bike and some food such as an energy bar or gel. Do not litter the course. We want Brights Grove to invite us back again. Stick your wrappers back in your pocket.

The bike course is exceptionally well marked, with lots of volunteers. All the corners have been swept.

Watch for children, cars and runners especially as you return to Brights Grove at the end of your ride. A trail vehicle will return cyclists to the start if they are unable to continue.

Run The Duathlon Run 1 is a simple well marked loop.

The Triathlon Run/Duathlon Run 2 goes along the lake; first west, then east. Seven water stops are available. Washrooms are available at the Church and School. If you bring energy bars or gels on the run course, please dispose of them at the water stops. Do not litter the course. At the finish, proceed through the finish line chute promptly to avoid interfering with other athletes finishing their race.

Post Race The post race meal is part of your race package. It is a single pass through. Athletes can gain entry to the buffet by showing their body markings; athletes’ hands will be marked to show they have passed through. Hotdogs, drinks, and cookies for family and friends, can be purchased for a small fee. The awards ceremony will start at noon or so in the finish line area.

The results will be available on the web at www.bluewatertriathlon.ca shortly following the race.
