How a Children's Safety Village Works!

During classroom sessions at our Safety Village, safety awareness instructors representing police and fire services, education, and volunteers will introduce area children at the grades one to three level to the knowledge necessary for their well-being in relation to street safety, bicycle safety, fire safety, electrical safety, railway safety, bus safety, exploitative behaviour by others, street proofing, substance abuse/use awareness, the use of 911 service, first aid, and other areas as they are identified.

Children will then have an opportunity to put their classroom lesson into action as they walk, pedal and drive around our Safety Village on bicycles and in mini-cars. The key aspect of a Safety Village is the practical hands-on application of the classroom education in a safe and controlled environment.

There will be classroom areas and a vehicle storage area in a main building. Within the safety city, there will be a hydro transformer set-up to promote safe practices around electricity, a railway crossing to alert young people to railway safety and a telephone hook-up to make children familiar with the use of 911 service in an emergency.

Benefits to Education

We will be incorporating specific expectations outlined in The Ontario Curriculum Health and Physical Education Document (August 1998) for grades one to four under the Healthy Living sections on Personal Safety and Injury Prevention and Substance Use and Abuse.
