LAMBTON SAFE COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Annual Report - 2001-2002

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

  • In the largest single grant yet received by the Lambton Safe Community Council, $35,800 was received from the Trillium Foundation for the purchase of a speed monitor trailer and related operational costs. The trailer was set up on eight Sarnia residential streets, following an introduction in a 4-month campaign called "Operation Slowdown". It will later be used in the County, as well.

  • A site for Mackenzie Safety and Heritage Village was obtained at Petrolia Discovery. Promotional brochures, drawings by Jorge De Guzman, and kits to solicit corporate and other donations have been prepared. MPP Marcel Beaubien hosted a meeting of business and political leaders to introduce the plan.

  • The Risk Watch program was successfully introduced into area schools and is set to more than double in size, this coming school year.

  • Behaviour Based Safety has been maintained and broadened. Task Analysis, Root Cause Analysis and additional safety measures have been promoted. A paper on the success of the local program was presented at the 5th Annual Safe Communities Conference, and 11th International Safe Communities Conference, in Rainy River.

  • The goal to reduce reportable injuries, set when BBS was introduced, has almost been reached, two years early.

  • A large Safety Partnership conference, at which Paul Kells of the Safe Communities Foundation spoke, summarized the experience of local industries and labour in accident reduction.

  • Training of small businesses in the SCIP program took place. Work proceeded to establish a successor program to SCIP. A new newsletter, The Safety Sentinel, was developed for small businesses.

  • Incorporation of the Lambton Safe Community Council took place, September 14. This was followed, in the spring, by recognition as a charitable organization.

  • Lambton County was selected to host the 6th national Safe Communities Conference, in October 2003.

  • Other committees of the Lambton Safe Community Council continued to contribute to the safety of area residents in many ways.
