The Fun Day – History Repeats ItselfIf there is one thing I have learned, it is that the weather will be miserable at some point during the day when the OMHC Fun Day is scheduled. In the few years that we have hosted the Fun Day Cyan Star Morgans, the morning or the early evening will be wet and windy but the afternoon never fails to be nice. On the morning of June 4 th, the rain poured, the thunder boomed and the wind swirled around making it interesting trying to set up tents and chairs etc. for the fun day! But we held steadfast that the rain would move out as the radar map said it would and we would have a good afternoon. We had 11 horses participate in the games; Thank you to Laurel Gould for bringing her 3 Morgan geldings; Temptation’s Symphony ridden by Laurel, Fly Di Thunder Storm ridden by Eydie Gilbank and Northline Regency Hawk ridden by Harley Van Dam. Thanks to Brenda Casteels for bringing her two horses; her Morgan P.R.’s Kept My Promise who she rode and her quarter horse Cody for Val Reeson to ride. Thanks to Jane Davy-Ward and Amanda Belloso for riding down to the farm on their Morgans Radar and Courageous Angel. And from our farm, Kyla Vendrig rode her gelding MLF Merlin, Jennifer Sills rode her mare Trillium Hot Chili Pepper, I rode Saralin’s Markessa and my student Madeleine Gainy rode Joland Ovation.
We started with the Command class and ended with the hilarious apple bobbing. In between we had fun with musical stalls, steady hand, potato race and in lieu of eggs, we had a lime and spoon race! We had great fun watching the old show horses like Saralin’s Markessa, Joland Ovation and Fly Di Thunder Storm hold their own against the young upstarts like Trillium Hot Chili Pepper, Tempation’s Symphony and P.R.’s Kept My Promise. From the young gelding Radar who hasn’t been off the farm to the gentle quarter horse Cody who took care of his rider we had it all and we had fun. The fun isn’t just for kids either so if you believed the fun day was just for young riders, you would be wrong. It is for everyone at any age and any level of rider.
The musical stalls class was particularly challenging this year as we held two heats and a Championship Class! In the pairs class we had 4 entries try their best to hold it together. And a command class full of Morgans is always interesting when you call for the reverse and walk! The Race and Stand class was hard to call until the end when the top two horses were the fancy English Pleasure horses! Many thanks to our officials this year: David Kavanagh for organizing the games and Danny Kavanagh and Derek Ross for assisting. Thanks to our ‘judges’ Deana Wilson and Sherri Wilson, I know there were some close calls! Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the day, brought food for the potluck, carrots and treats for the horses and helped in any way, it is very much appreciated.
So, in 2012 if we go ahead and plan a fun day and the weatherman calls for a rather wet and nasty day, do not give up hope, The Fun Day will be a go for sure! Command Class 1 st Eydie and Storm Steady Hand Class 1 st Brenda & Vic
